Madagascar

This former French colony got its independence from France on 26 June, 1960. The area of the island is 587 041 km2 , the density of population is quite small ? there live only 18 606 000 inhabitants (2005).

One of the largest island in the world is exceptional mainly due to the fact that from the evolution point of view, it separated from the African continent very long time ago. Thus the evolution could follow a different path in comparison with the mainland. Fauna and flora are very well preserved here – you can find many species that dissapeared from continental Africa in the period of early Quaternary.

The climate of Madagascar is geographically very diverse and that´s why there are so many ecosystems – from deep rain forests, rocky and bushy land till the desert and semi-desert areas. The lemurs are certainly the most important endemical animals that do not live anywhere else in the world. Thanks to the extremely rugged terrain and some very remote areas, even today, there are still new species being discovered. Among the plants, it is mainly some succulent species that are unique. They can surprise you with their often bizzare body parts – these are water reservoirs.

The Madagascar is also very interesting out of the landscape point of view – the Tsingy national park is a unique area protected by the UNESCO.
